IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William "Mike"
Michael Simms
November 10, 1948 – April 12, 2017
William Michael (Mike) Simms
On April 12, 2017, William Michael (Mike) Simms of Malvern, peacefully passed away, after more than 15 years fighting leukemia. While he did not get to check off everything on his bucket list, he did have a spectacular time on this planet.
A wonderful gentleman and treasured husband Mike is survived by his wife, Linda (Unkefer) Simms, whom he married Nov. 20, 2000; daughter, Stacey Simms (Tarah Schroeder) of Denver, CO; son, Matthew (Jessica) Simms of Minerva; 3 grandchildren, Ava, Edee, Isaac; and a barn full of nephews and nieces. There are three Simms brothers who will carry on the laughter and fun, James (Ruth Ann), Larry (Christine) and Dave. He is preceded in death by five sisters, Helen Hart, Geraldine Simms, Dorothy Simms, Mary Lee Flanagan, Ruth Ann Simms; four brothers, Stanley, Harold, Robert, and Richard and parents William and Grace (Wonhas) Simms.
His children, Stacey and Matt, are grateful for all the years with their Dad. It's funny how he grew smarter as they grew older. The post-diagnosis years were just as joyous, as he was able to celebrate at their weddings, fall in love with the grand-kids, spend holidays filled with "Mike jokes" and to softly talk for hours, sharing the love between father and child. Matt and Stacey are shaped by the numerous lessons learned and the examples he set. Always keeping his chin up, never losing his sense of himself during his battle and comforting others with a simple "it is, what it is" are just a few of the many things they carry. His spirit will live on in their love of their families, completing their own "bucket list" adventures and the joy they share with their friends.
An active citizen of the Minerva area, Mike spent years giving to others. Many will recall his term serving as President of the Rotary Club, years of giving his time to the young people of his community and being an avid Lion and Buckeye fan. He enjoyed cheering on the Ohio sports teams (in good years, and in bad) and making jokes about the "team up North". But, he enjoyed very few things more than his friends. Mike had many, many dear friends, whom will continue to share his corny jokes, stories, and spirit.
In his youth, Mike was a talented basketball and football player for Minerva. He was the first Lion to rush for more than 1,000 yards (1966) and currently still holds the records for the most interceptions in a season and the longest run from scrimmage. After graduating from Minerva High School, Mike went on to Youngstown State University and Kent State University to continue his football and academic careers. In 2013, surrounded by friends and family, Mike was inducted into the Minerva Hall of Fame.
His family wants to thank Dr. Haut, Dr. Kimble and the professional and compassionate staff of Aultman Hospital. Their treatment gave Mike the additional years to enjoy his family and friend, and their compassion made his journey easier.
A memorial party will be planned for this summer, and plans will be shared accordingly. In lieu of flowers, and in his honor, please consider a contribution to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, Minerva food bank or the charity of your choice.
Mike is loved and will be greatly missed.
