Sydney A. (Johnson) Walton, 73, of Salem, went home to the Lord on Sunday, September 25th at Auburn Skilled Nursing in Damascus after courageous year-long battle with cancer. She was born January 24, 1943 to the late Albert F. and Flora I. (Hanna) Johnson. A 1961 graduate of Salem High School, she received her BS in Home Economics in 1965 from Hiram College. A devoted wife and mother, Sydney also worked as an operator for Ohio Bell and taught Home Economics at Warren Harding High School until the arrival of her children. As a second career, she used her love of children to teach at the preschools at Salem First Christian and Alliance First Baptist Churches. She spent 10 years as a teacher for Stark County Head Start program as well as working as a cashier at the former Ames Department Store in Salem.

Sydney joins her husband, Homer D. Walton, who she married on May 28, 1967, and who preceded her in death on October 5, 1992. She leaves behind three children, Sarah (Kevin) Swope of Salem, Ada (Jeff) Jahns of Fremont, and Ben (Amy) Walton of Malvern. She gloried in her five grandchildren; Caleb Swope, Rebecca (Ryan) Zeisler, Hannah Swope, Emma Jahns, and Heidi Jahns and her two great-grandsons; Roy Zeisler and Emmitt Swope, brother Greg (Kendra) Johnson of Hanoverton and numerous nieces and nephews.
Sydney spent her free time as an active member of the archivists for Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio and as a member of the Order of the Silver Trefoil with Girls scouts USA.

Calling hours will be held from 1 to 3 pm on Wednesday September 28th at the Highland Christian Church on 5330 Yates Rd., Salem with a funeral service to follow at 3:00 pm. Burial will be in the Highland Christian Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Sydney asked that donations be sent to the Black Swamp Bird Observatory, 13551 W. State Rt. 2, Oak Harbor, OH 43449, where she enjoyed watching the spring migrations with her granddaughters.
