Robert "Buzz" Witherspoon
Age 87, of Guilford Lake, died Sunday, Dec. 7th 2014 in his home surrounded by his family. He was born Aug. 3, 1927 in Canton to Earl and Edith (Eick) Witherspoon. He graduated from Minerva High School in 1945 and enlisted in the Navy at 17 years of age and served at the U.S. arsenal in Seal Beach, CA until the end of WWII.
Buzz married his high school sweetheart, Shirley (Grimes) Witherspoon, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Minerva on Dec. 8, 1945, where they are active members today. Buzz is a lifetime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where he had served his church on the council and finance committee.
Buzz was a tool and die maker for over 45 years. He was an owner of Carnation Machine and Tool in Alliance, where he served as President, was an owner of Monarch Products in Minerva and served the company as vice-president. He is a member of the Minerva Historical Society, Guilford Lake Civic Assoc., and in his early years, served as a cub master with the local Boy Scouts in New Franklin.
He was the most loving and caring husband and father to four children and their families and will be sadly missed by all. He is survived by his wife of nearly 69 years, Shirley; three children, Charles (Cathy) Witherspoon of Canton, GA, Randy L. Witherspoon of Salem and Lynette (Jeff) Church of Alliance; six grandchildren, Robert (Kristen) Witherspoon of Clarkston, GA, Seth (Justine) Witherspoon of Longmont, CO, Amanda (Dan) Hosterman of Smyrna, GA, Ashley (Bobby) Saenger of Canton, GA, Tyler and Anthony Church of Alliance; five great grandchildren, Chloe and Henry Witherspoon, Gavin and Miles Hosterman and Matthew Douglas Saenger; nephews, Jeffery Baker and Don Witherspoon, Jr.; niece, Judy Witherspoon; sister-in-law, Janet Witherspoon of Minerva; and a brother-in-law, Richard (Linda) Baker of Alliance. He is preceded in death by daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Doug Waefler; sister, June Baker; and brother, Dan Witherspoon.
Funeral services will be Friday at 12:00 noon in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Minerva with Rev. Steven Woyen officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday 5-7 pm in the Gotschall-Hutchison Funeral Home in Minerva and one hour prior to services at the church.
