Joseph A. Pontones

Age 97, of Minerva, died Tuesday, January 30, 2018 in Danbury Senior Living in Massillon. He was born in Canton on October 9, 1920 to Jesus and Mary (Edilla) Pontones. He retired from Indian River School where he worked for the procurement department. He also worked for the Luntz Corporation. He attended the St. George Romanian Byzantine Rite Catholic Cathedral in Canton. He was a US Marine Corp Veteran, the former 10 ^th District Commander of the American Legion. He was a member of the American Legion  Post #357 in Minerva where he held many offices, Carroll County Veterans Service commission member, and member of the Minerva VFW #4120 and 40 & 8.

He is survived by his wife, Irene (Siofletia) Pontones whom he married July 13, 1947, 2 daughters, Julie (Jim) Martin of Uniontown, Debbie (Nick) Pfeiffer of Canton; 5 sisters, Mary (Bill) Eakins of Canton, Deloris (Joel) Deckman of FL, Violet Wright of Riverside, CA, Ann (George) Kast of North Olmstead, Blanche Reinart of Massillon; 3 brothers, Elias (Consuelo) Pontones of Columbus, John "Jack" of Westerville, Arthur Pontones of Waynesburg; sister in law, Martha Pontones of Grove City, 4 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by a sister, Theresa Nelson; 4 brothers, Jesus, Francis, Ramon and George Pontones.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 12:00 noon at Gotschall-Hutchison Funeral home with Father Ovidiu Marginean officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Liberty Cemetery. Calling hours will be Saturday 2 hours prior to services from 10-12 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. George Romanian Byzantine Rite Catholic Cathedral.
