JOHN DEMETER
Age 88 of Davenport, Iowa, died Friday, May 6, 2011, in the Hope Creek Care Center in E. Moline, Il. He was born Feb. 2, 1923 in New Brighton, Penn., to Julius and Elizabeth Demeter. He graduated from Augusta High School and enlisted in the Marine Corps in June 1941, where he served for 25 1/2 years and received an honorable discharge December 31, 1966. During his tour of duty he attained the rank of MSgt E-8 with a title of auto mechanic. He received the following: good conduct medal for Asiatic-Pacific area; American Theater; WW II Victory; Korean Service Medal; United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Marksman Rifle Badge, and Pistol Sharpshooter Badge. During his years of military service they lived in many parts of the country including North Carolina, California, Virgina, Hawaii, and Chicago. After discharge from the service he retired in Canton, Ohio where he worked for the US Post Office as a mechanic. He was a member of Perry Christian Church where he loved to sing in the choir.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Leora Demeter, a daughter Darla Sumner, son-in-law Alan North, his parents, five brothers and one sister. He is survived by two daughters, Nancy North of Oceanside, Calif and Kathleen Kelly of Davenport, Iowa; a son Craig Demeter of San Francisco; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two sisters Irene Cole and Elizabeth Hodula.
Funeral services will be Thursday, May12th, 2011 at 2 p.m. in the Gotschall-Hutchison Funeral Home in Minerva with Mr. Craig Ott officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Augusta Cemetery. Calling hours will be held two hours prior to the services at the funeral home.
