James "Beat" Smith Jr.

Age 69, of Malvern, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2019. He was born May 5, 1949 in Troy, NY to James and Lorraine (Weida) Smith Sr. He retired from the Timken Company where he was a Data Processor for 31 years.  He was a Sgt. in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He is a member of the American Legion Post #375 in Malvern and a life member of the VFW Post #4120 in Minerva. He is a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Malvern where he served as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector and Alter Server.  He was an avid golfer and member of the Timken Bowling Team.

He is survived by his son, Patrick (Amanda) Smith of Louisville, 3 sisters, Sharon Lucas of Minerva, JoAnne Green of Canton, Janet (Doug) Speakman of Minerva. Brother, Leland (Lois) Smith of Chillicothe, aunt, Dorothy McGarry of Chesterland, 3 grandchildren, Talon, Maverick and Nova.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be Friday at 3:00 pm in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Malvern with military honors to follow. Calling hours will be Friday from 1-3 pm prior to services at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
