James J. Smith

Age 92, of Minerva, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2021 in Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital in Canton. He was born Sept. 19, 1929 in Amsterdam to Mike and Anna (Fatora) Smith. He worked in the coal mines around Cadiz for 26 years and worked in construction. He is a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Amsterdam and is a US Army Veteran of the Korean War.  He is a former member of the Amsterdam VFW.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Donna (Bordon) Smith who died in 2007; 5 sisters, Sister Mestave (Mary) Smith, Madeline Morris, Irene Kolesar, Mildred Buttermore, Ann Wilks; 4 brothers, Steve, Michael, George and Tom Smith.

He is survived by a daughter, Roseanne (Michael) Repella of Minerva; 3 sons, James (Diane) Smith of Coventry, Greg (Diane) Smith of Minerva, Edward (Angela) Smith of Amsterdam; 6 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

A Mass of the Christian Burial will be Tuesday at 11:00 am in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Amsterdam with Fr. John McCoy as celebrant.  Burial with full military honors will be in Fort Steuben Burial Estates in Steubenville.
