Obituary

Howard James "Chief" Myers

Age 94, of Paris, passed away Monday, Aug. 28, 2023 in the Arbors of Minerva from gangrene that started in his toe after a fall on April 19th.  Prior to entering the Arbors, he lived in a house that he built on the family farm where he was born, June 18th, 1929, the only son of Emmett and Verda (Speakman) Myers.

He went to school in Louisville where he met his wife Betty Lou Canoles from Minerva and they were married on Easter Sunday, April 9th, 1950 and celebrated 63 years of marriage, just before her death May 23, 2013. He started working for the Lotz Brothers and eventually bought them out and he and Betty started the Myers Construction and Concrete Business in Paris until closing it in 1974.  He and Betty followed the Golden Rule in business as well as life. He then was employed at Homestead Meats for 13 years and then retired from Biery Cheese after 17 years.

In the 1970's, Howard and Betty were very active in the CB world.  Howard went by "Chief" and Betty was "Eagle Eyes", where they talked all over the country and Canada with his "boom beams".  He loved to spend time riding with Betty in his 1958 Corvette that he called his chariot, his 1961 Harley and his Farmall H.  He loved working on clocks and decorating for Christmas and was always doing projects around the house well into his 80's. A couple of his favorite memories involved transporting the Minerva High School Queen and court, the attendants for the Constitution Day Parade and Marion Motley in the Hall of Fame Parade in his 1958 corvette.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty, a son, Joseph Lynn, granddaughter, Valeria Renee Myers, a son-in-law, Tommy Ray Taylor and his dogs, Ming, Peling and Ling and his parents and a sister, Rachel Rice.  He is survived by daughter, Jean Louise Myers of Paris who took care of him, son, James Lee Roy Myers of Minerva, daughter, Janet Leigh (Myers) Simpson of Louisville, Jamie Lou (Myers) Campbell of Louisville.

"So long, see you later, love Jean"

A private graveside service will be held at Liberty Cemetery with Rev. Steve Stewart officiating.  Memorial contributions may be made in Betty and Ling's name to the Toledo Humane Society, 1920 Indian Wood Circle, Maumee, OH 43537.  Those wishing to send condolences may sign the online register at www.gotschallfuneralhome.com.
