Obituary

Gregory Carroll Granger,
age 64, of Minerva, died Sunday March 27, 2011 in Minerva Eldercare with his family by his side after a courageous two-year battle with brain cancer.  He was born Aug. 12, 1946 in Canton to the late Carroll and Elsie (Hall) Granger.
He retired from the Louisville School District where he taught for 30 years. He also spent time working as a weekend manager for the McKinley Museum and occasionally as a tour guide for The Traveling Schools of America.  After retirement he had worked for the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center, Project Rebuild and Midwest Manufactured Homes.  A classical musician, he spent time playing with the Canton Symphony, Akron Symphony, New Philadelphia Philharmonic, Canton Community Band and had been a member of the All Ohio Boys Band. He was chosen as first-chair percussionist for the world famous Boys Band of America, making him the highest ranked American percussionist of his age in 1964.  He graduated from East Canton High School in 1964 and received his Bachelor's of Education and Masters in Secondary Administration from Kent State University. He is a Jennings Scholar and member of the Ohio Education Assoc. and past president of the Louisville Education Assoc.
He is survived by his wife, Diane (Betz) Granger who he married July 17, 1982; two sons, Douglas and Matthew Granger of the home; brother, Scott (Peg) Granger; mother-in-law, Ruth Betz of Minerva; sister-in-law, Debby (David) Wolpert of Alliance; 2 nieces; 2 nephews and 5 great nephews.
Following cremation, a funeral service will be held Friday at 12:30 pm in the Gotschall-Hutchison Funeral Home in Minerva with Rev. Fred Bays officiating.  Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery.  Calling hours will be held from 11 am to 12:30 pm prior to services.  Memorial contributions may be made to the family to help with medical expenses.  Those unable to attend may sign the register at www.gotschallfuneralhome.com
