IN LOVING MEMORY OF
George L.
Place
December 11, 1944 – July 11, 2024
George L. Place Jr., age 79, passed away on July 11, 2024, after a six-week struggle due to complications following a medical procedure. Born on December 11, 1944, in Akron, Ohio, to George L. Place Sr. and Mildred K. (Mathers) Place, George entered the world as a premature baby; however, quickly proved himself a fighting survivor.
George graduated from Ohio State University and initially taught eighth-grade history. He later moved to California to pursue a career in business, working for large door and window companies in customer sales quotes and estimates. This role suited him well, given his obsession with numbers and statistics. When his job was replaced by technology, he retired and returned to Ohio to be a strawberry farmer, but the relentless weeds prevented him from making it more than just a hobby.
George dedicated a significant portion of his life to delivering thousands of newspapers, a task he faithfully performed until February 2024, when the newspapers transitioned to postal delivery. He took immense pride in his work, ensuring that each paper was placed exactly where the customer wanted it. George cherished the Christmas cards he received from his customers every year, a testament to his commitment to providing exceptional service.
George was a frugal man, shaped by the values of his depression-era parents and the loss of his mother at the age of 19. When the soles of his shoes wore out, he used duct tape to extend their life. If his glasses broke, he would tape them back together. His practicality was evidence of his upbringing and resilience.
Known for his quirky personality, George often engaged in lengthy conversations that reflected his unique theories, regardless of whether others agreed with his views. He loved a great debate and remained true to himself until the end.
George is survived by his daughter, Christa (Mark) Clapper of Marshall, MI; his son, Steven Place of Louisville, KY; his four grandsons, Dakota, Colton, Carter, and Carson Clapper; and his sister, Carol Puckett of Carrollton, OH. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Carl Place.
A graveside memorial gathering will be held on July 12, 2025 at 11 am, at Westview Cemetery in Carrollton, Ohio. All who knew George are welcome to attend.
