Doris Stafford Ervin

Age 97, of Hilliard and formerly New Philadelphia, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2023 in Dublin Methodist Hospital. She was born March 21, 1925 in Cambridge to William Edgar and Leah Lenore (Addy) Stafford. The family moved to Columbiana County in 1932, where Doris lived until 1985. After four years in Bad Kreuznach, West Germany, where her husband Roy was a teacher with the DoD Dependents Schools, they relocated to New Philadelphia in Tuscarawas County Ohio.

Doris graduated from Lisbon High School and the College of Steubenville, graduating from college the same month her son graduated from high school. She taught first grade at West Point Elementary School near Lisbon for the Beaver Local School District.

She was a member and ordained elder of the First Presbyterian Church in New Philadelphia and for many years was active in Presbyterian Women's work. She was a member of The Ohio Genealogical Society; The Guernsey County Genealogical Society; First Families of Ohio; First Families of Guernsey County; The Society of Civil War Families of Ohio; The Ohio Retired Teachers Association and the Tuscarawas County Chapter; and the Tuscarawas County Historical Society. She was a Seventh Degree Grange member, with local membership in the Bayard Grange in Minerva and was a charter member of the New Philadelphia Chapter #4639 AARP, serving for many years as secretary and president. She was a member of several environmental organizations and a regular contributor to organizations assisting Native Americans.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Roy who died in 2021, 2 brothers, Donald and William Roger Stafford and 2 sisters, Eleanor Weber and Ruth Maple.

She is survived by daughter, Darlene Thompson (Phil Taylor) of Ostrander, 2 sons, Dennis (Barb) Thompson of East Liverpool, Roy Ervin (Lynn) of South Dakota; grandchildren, Heather Thompson-(Brian) Gillis, Shane Thompson, Zachary Ervin, Kristina (Bill) Cornell, Erin (Mike) Hofherr ,  Jenna (Doug) Sweitzer  and 9 great grandchildren .

Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at a later date.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Southwest Indian Foundation, 100 West Coal Ave, Gallup, NM 87303.
