Obituary

Daniel A. Karlen

Daniel "Demo" Karlen, age 43, of Canton, left this reality on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011 from Glioblastoma Multiforme.  He was born May 10, 1968 in Canton to Larry Karlen of Minerva and the late Judy (Reid) Karlen.  He graduated from Malvern High School and received a Bachelor's Degree in Business Finance from the University of Akron.  He is a member of the Perry First Christian Church.  From his time as master of the tri toms for the Malvern Marching Band to his legendary stint at Long John Silver's, Demo Karlen was a high quality human.  He was bi-lingual in Spanish, leading to his long time employment as an interpreter with GE Capital.  He also worked in Computer Finance for the Banking Industry in Cleveland.  In college, Dan was a bit of a fashionista, reviving the day robe, pipe smoking, over a game of chess, look…all the time cooking gourmet victuals in the kitchen.  He was unique and a leader, most exemplified by his two terms served as President of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity at the University of Akron.  Ultimately though, Dan was both a lover and a fighter.  He handled the adversity placed in front of him with grace and poise and never lost sight of the importance of love, family and friends.  Daniel "Demo" Karlen was a great man.  He will be greatly missed and greatly remembered by all who knew him.  He was a great father and husband. He took his daughter every Thursday for dinner at Samantha's and every Saturday to the movies.

He is survived by his wife, Jill (Moskowitz) Karlen whom he married July 29, 1995; daughter, Judith Elaine Karlen of the home; brother, Brent Karlen of Akron; father and stepmother, Larry and Patsy Karlen of Minerva; father and mother-in-law, Joel and Sally Moskowitz of N. Canton.

In addition to his mother, he is preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Elaine Moskowitz.

Funeral services will be Friday at 11:00 am in the Gotschall-Hutchison Funeral Home with Chaplain Larry Karlen and Rev. Jon Johnson officiating.  Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery.  Calling hours will be Thursday (tonight) 5-8 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Daniel A. Karlen Memorial Fund at any First Merit Bank.
